Happy February to all of my classmates of all ethnic denominations LOL (how many days are in February this year?). February always means a few different things to me, including but not limited to, Valentine's Day, my sister's birthday, and Black History. This year is especially historic for African-Americans everywhere because of the election of Barack Obama to the office of the President of the United States of America. The one thing that I do find strange is that Black History Month is just that. As Morgan Freeman stated in an interview in December 2005, "You're going to relegate my history to a month? I don't want a Black History Month...Black History is American History." However, until US public schools give a more in-depth presentation of black history, Black History Month will and must stay. The fact that Black History is separated from US history is intriguing to me because I find that America prides itself on racial unity and equality. I am not one of those disgruntled Blacks who complains everytime some one refers to us as "they" or "them" or even "those people". I am simply of the belief that even though Black culture is vibrant and unique, Blacks still live voluntarily separate from Whites. I wish to bring an end to the ignorance (my friends are gonna eat this alive). Anyways, I'm just speaking my mind and I wanted to express myself.
PS: Why does it feel like I am forcing my writing lately? It just feels like I am not writing like I have been able to before. I shall try to figure it out.
RIP: Prominent African-Americans who died in 2008:
Isaac Hayes-Singer, Songwriter, and Actor
Bernie Mac-Actor/Comedian
Eartha Kitt-Actress/Singer
Sean Levert-R&B Singer
Bo Diddley-Rock'N'Roll Icon
Gene Upshaw-NFLPA (NFL Player's Association) Leader
Levi Stubbs-Member of the Four Tops
The "N" Word-LOL
I didn't realize that all of these prominent black people died within the last year. Also it's very ironic that America prides itself on equality, yet no one is equal. Many minorities have their own month devoted to their race and culture, African Americans and Hispanics alike. Either way I will still continue to celebrate Black History Month.
ReplyDeleteWhile black history month and other minority monthes still have a relatively large support I feel that in the future they will become less and less important. As the amount to inter-racial marrages goes up so do the amount of inter-ratial kids. In the future everyone will have a little bit of many different minorities in their blood. That is why I feel it much more important that we celebrate ourselves as being American rather than being a race.
